The Homestead Record
One farm, many generations, the same ground.
Generations ago, the Knudsen family, Norwegian immigrants, settled a stretch of Iowa farmland and stayed. A small plot on the property still holds the family's graves: the same generations who worked the ground now rest in it.
That ground grows corn today largely because federal subsidies keep it profitable, a fact the family discusses candidly at its annual farm meeting, where the younger generation debates what the operation should become next.
At one of those meetings, the connection was obvious in hindsight: corn is the backbone of American whiskey, and the farm grows plenty of it. Wooden Badger is what came of following that thread.
— Excerpted from the family's own account, Knudsen Homestead, Iowa
- Settled by The Knudsen family, Norwegian immigrants, several generations back.
- Still on the land A family gravesite holding generations of Knudsens, on the same acreage farmed today.
- The annual question Corn stays profitable through subsidy. The family meets yearly to weigh what modernizing the farm should look like.
- The idea Turn the farm's own corn into a branded, exportable whiskey instead of a subsidized commodity crop.
The name
"Every registry needs a name. Ours came from a Monty Python fan at the family table: a wooden badger, presented as a gift to some very unsuspecting French knights. We kept it. It doesn't take itself too seriously. The whiskey does."

The Production Ledger
No whiskey exists to sell yet. Here is where things stand.
| Entry | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Distilling partner | IN DISCUSSION | Talking with established licensed distilleries. No production agreement is final and no whiskey has been made. |
| Estate barrel program | PLANNING | A planned grain-to-glass batch using the homestead's own corn. Mash bill and partner are still being decided. |
| Retail distribution | PRE-LAUNCH | Typical lag from finished mash bill to shelf runs 2–3 years. Any release must first clear federal label approval (TTB COLA) and state licensing. |
The Export Case
U.S. whiskey consumption is soft, and the domestic shelf is owned by companies with budgets a family farm can't match. Wooden Badger's premium credential travels better than it competes: American provenance and a single family farm, marketed abroad the way single-estate spirits already are at home. The plan starts where that story lands hardest.
Southeast Asia
Near-term focus market. First international entry is targeted around 2029.
PriorityIndia
Long-term target market for a premium, provenance-led American whiskey.
TargetEast Africa
Long-term target market, part of the same premium-export thesis.
TargetFor Partners & Distributors
Wooden Badger is in development: distilling partners are being chosen and an estate barrel program is being planned around the homestead's own corn. If you're evaluating it for a pour, a shelf, or a launch (a bar program, a distributor book, an export relationship), we'd rather talk now, while the terms are still being written.
This is a pre-launch brand. There is no product for sale, and nothing on this site is an offer to sell or a solicitation to buy alcohol. Plans and timelines described here are forward-looking and may change.
